"I Have Gifts & Abilities & a Desire to Succeed!"

Our authors of this week's post have decided to spice up our blog with some colour coding!

Mrs. Will's Messages:

  1. The kids absolutely CRUSHED their volleyball unit. I am continually impressed by this class's habits of cheering each other on, offering helpful tips, noticing and celebrating students as they make improvements in their phys. ed. skills, and their overall commitment to showing sportsmanship. I'm also grateful that they don't think it's "uncool" (yet) to have this old lady teacher join in and play on their teams...
  2. If, as a parent/guardian, you are trying to come up with ways to bond with your child over what they are learning in school, I highly suggest you ask your child to teach you some math games they know. All of the games can be played using dice, cards, and/or dominos. One of the best skills your child can work on is practicing and memorizing their multiplication facts up to 9x9 - this will help them get better at division and they will be able to apply multiplication to bigger concepts like order of operations questions, algebra, and area & volume!
  3. Fridays... While Friday's are a half day this year, I feel it's important to remind everyone that they are still important learning days. We still work on all core subjects each Friday (Literacy, Math, Science, and Social) and most students are in a small group for extra help in either literacy or math that is scheduled for every Friday. If they miss Fridays on a regular basis, they then miss that support they need to be successful in grade 6.
This week:

ELA

To prepare for our Spring Concert, we are writing poetry about spring with as many examples of figurative language as we can. We will be combining our writing to write a poem about Spring battling Winter as a class and then working together to turn it into a poetry performance (also known as "Slam Poetry")

Math
In Math we have been learning about PEMDAS or order of operations.
Parenthesis
Exponents
Multiply
Divide
Add
Subtract
EX: (5x3)+4-2
The answer is 17 always put your answer in a box.

Parents or Guardians may also recognize the term "BEDMAS" which is the other term we use often!

Science
In our lovely science we have been working on designing a semi truck to ship Mrs. Will's food across Canada to Safeways, Superstores, Walmarts, ect. She was pretending that she needed to hire engineers (us!) to design a more aerodynamic semi-truck for her new delivery company. Mrs. Will saw everyone of our semi trucks and chose a winner based on creativity and how we designed our trucks to reduce drag. We all did very good in our opinion and congratulate I.M. on her victory!

Social
In Social we are learning about the class system in Ancient Athens and how that affected people's rights to vote or be a part of making important decisions.
There are three different classes:
1st. Citizens

2nd. Metics
3rd. Slaves
Citizens are the highest class but to be a citizen you have to be a man, to have served in the military, to have no job so that you have time to go to the Assembly for meetings and votes, and both your parents must be from Athens. Male citizens are the only people who can vote or hold a government position.

Metics are allowed to vote because they are not from Athens and slaves are not either. Women and children also have little to no rights.

Health (Heroes)
In Heroes we have been learning about walls and how we stop those walls from stopping our strengths and abilities. We also put our fears on paper and crumpled them up and had a paper fight with them. After we picked two random fears we opened them up and read them out loud. Our motto for Heroes is:
“I have gifts and abilities and a desire to succeed!”

Gym
In Gym we were doing a volleyball unit but sadly we have to move on to the scooters. Hopefully it will be as fun as volleyball!

MUSIC
We are doing hand bells. Our song that we did for the spring concert is called “EVENING RISE”. Hopefully you all will like it.
