Spring is in the Air!

Spring is in the Air!

Hello Families!

We hope you were able to enjoy some of that early Spring sunshine peeking through the clouds!

Two messages from Mrs. Will:

1. A reminder that your child will be bringing home a short homework task each Monday that is due the following Monday. These are not meant to be difficult or time consuming, just an opportunity for your child to practice time management skills and to prepare for regular homework in grade 7. Students can hand their homework in early or ask any questions they have before it's due.

2. The Spring poem that we wrote as a class for our Spring Concert is I.N.C.R.E.D.I.B.L.E! Our class worked so well together to co-write a poem with 21 authors (no small feat!) that shows off our strong understanding of figurative language and kept a tone/mood consistent for our audience.

Here's what we did this week according to M.K. and I.M.:

Science: This week in science we were learning about gravity, thrust, drag and lift, and how to combine these 4 forces to design a flying device. While learning about these 4 forces of air we did a paper throwing contest. The objective was to get paper (preferably an airplane) to the other side of the room using the four forces. We had to get enough lift and thrust but not too much thrust that it causes it to do a backflip, and we had to reduce as much drag as possible. When we learned about gravity most of us added some weight to our planes to make it swift through the air easily. Ask your kid a bit about aerodynamics and their designs!

Social: We continued learning about Ancient Athens. We learned about the assembly, made of 6000 people at least, voting on everything that would affect Ancient Athens. They voted on food, supplies, taxes, agreements with other city-states, whether to go to war or not, etc.  We learned about the Council of 500, also called the Boule (pronounced boo-lee). The Boule was made of men over 30, who were randomly chosen, and you could only serve in the Boule twice. The Boule’s job was to decide on the topics the assembly voted on. The assembly of course also had the age restriction of 30, since most men under that age were serving in the military.

Literacy: We finished writing our Spring Poetry and chose our speaking parts. Then we came up with ideas to make our performance more fancy. We also took our parts home to practice and memorize. On Thursday we will be recording our performance.

Math: In math we were doing algebra and PEMDAS (you may also know it as BEDMAS). We had a snake worksheets where there were math questions using all 4 operations and we played “What’s under my thumb?” - an algebra game. You can play this at home with cards or dice!

Gym: In gym we have scooters this week, we were playing an unnamed game! Pretty mysterious, right? In this game there were 4 teams we had a bunch of different versions but the starting base was to get as many birdies into your net or get as much birdies to the other team’s net, then we added special rules like stealing birdies, goalies, scooter stealing, etc.

Music: In music, we played more songs since we finished recording our performance for the Spring Concert, we also worked on our Jazz worksheets. One of the songs we played was Africa.
