The Blog Post Before Spring Break

March 23rd, 2021

Blog by: M.L. & B.T.

Hello families!

This will be our last blog before Spring break. A few notes/reminders:

  • I did not assign a homework task for this week because we'll be going on break for a week. I will assign the next one on the Tuesday we come back to school.
  • As always, email me anytime at akwill@cbe.ab.ca if you have questions, concerns, or are looking for ways to support your child's learning. I'm happy to help whenever I can!
  • If your child has been required to isolate, please contact the school so that we are aware and so that I can send them their classwork on Google Classroom until they are allowed to return. The school has Chromebooks available to rent if needed.
  • Google Classroom (and this blog) are both tools that help me to stay connected with students and families during these strange Covid times. With the exception of student who have been told to isolate, Google Classroom will have a literacy and a math task posted each week for extra help and for any students who are home sick for a day or two. It is to keep families aware of what we are working on each week incase someone is away or needs extra help. They are not mandatory assignments for the students, just resources to keep them caught up with the rest of the class.
I wish you all a sunny, relaxing Spring break with your families!
- Mrs. Will

Math: We played math games, did mad minutes to practice our 6, 7, and 8 times tables and worked on our algebra booklet. Some of the math games we played were “What’s Under My Hand?”, “Multiplication War”, and “Math-Style Go Fish”.

ELA: Our class finished our Spring Concert video to showcase our poem that we wrote about a battle between Spring and Winter. We brainstormed background images, sound effects, and transitions for our iMovie to bring our poem to life. From now until break, we will also be starting narrative writing by looking at how we can add suspense to our story writing. We are responding to picture prompts to write descriptions using our 5 senses and what Mrs. Will calls “The Stephen King strategy”.

Science: We learned the three movements of an airplane (pitch, roll and yaw) and the parts of the airplane that cause those movements (elevators, ailerons, and rudder). We are working on designing our last 2 paper airplane designs using these new terms to design a plane that will bank to either the left or right and a plane that will fly in a loop-to-loop. We need to figure out how to make a paper airplane do roll, pitch, and yaw.

Social: In Social we looked at a practice PAT exam with a partner. We were focusing on test-taking strategies, especially with multiple choice questions, and using our notes to prove how we knew the answer. The activity was a good review of our Athens unit and all the vocab words we learned.

Art: In Art we finished our Spring Concert art and it matches our poetry. We did art that represented Winter and Spring. One of the students did a half frozen heart with flowers blooming from the heart, another drew Spring as if she were a person.

Health(Heroes): In the Heroes program, we talked about our mental taproots, and our support roots. We talked about how people are our support roots and how we need to know how to support ourselves and be resilient.

Gym: This week Mrs Will taught us a way to play Hungry Hungry Hippos and basketball while on scooters. Our next unit when we come back from break will be yoga!

Music: In Music we played the Bells to different videos, such as, “Evening Rise 2”. We learned about Harmonic Duos and continued learning about the history of rhythm and blues music.
